What Is a Domra?

The domra is a traditional Russian string instrument with a round body and a bright, percussive tone, played with a plectrum. Hora makes two versions: a 3-string domra tuned e’-a’-d”, and a 4-string domra tuned g-d1-a1-e2, closer to a mandolin’s range.

3 Strings vs. 4 Strings: Which Hora Domra Should You Choose?

Both models share the same solid spruce top, solid maple back and sides, and 35 cm scale, so the choice comes down to the number of strings and tuning.

The 4-string version’s tuning is closer to a mandolin, so it may feel more familiar if you already play another fretted instrument, while the 3-string version follows the traditional domra playing style.
